A young boy is hoping his cakes will be a recipe for success – and help a blind great-gran get the treatment she needs to see her family again.

Lewis Lamb, 12, and his mum Kaarina are holding a fundraising event at William Hill in Olympus Business Park, Quedgeley, this weekend to raise money for Dorothy Leach.

We told you earlier this year how Dorothy, 75, of Springfield, Hardwicke, woke up one morning in February unable to see.

She has giant cell arteritis, an inflammatory disease of blood vessels.

The inflammation can affect blood supply to the eye which can result in blurred vision or sudden blindness,

Her family and friends are now striving to raise £16,000 to get her pioneering stem cell treatment in China.

Kaarina, William Hill manager, said: “Dorothy used to come to the bookies and used to bring us cakes when she could see. We would have mince pies or sponge cakes every Saturday.

“She would even bake some especially for my son.

“She is so nice and generous and I thought I would do something to help and Lewis is going to bake some scones and cakes for it too.”

As well as cakes in the raffle there will be plenty of top prizes including an MOT voucher from GL Autos, a stay at a four star B&B in Pembrokeshire, two Gloucester Rugby tickets and a Lewis Hamilton McLaren T-shirt.

Kaarina added: “We will have a guess the goals event on Saturday, where people can pay £1 to guess the number of goals in the Premiership down to League Two. The winner will get a £100 voucher to bet in the store.

“On Sunday, we will be having a big raffle with lots of prizes and local horse trainer Terry Walker, handing out prizes. Hopefully lots of people will come to help Dorothy.”

Dorothy’s daughter, Vicky, said: “Mum was always making cakes to send in for them so it is really nice of them to help her.”

To enter Guess the Goals, visit William Hill before Saturday morning. The raffle will be held on Sunday at 3pm.
